Hambantota International Port (HIP), a multi-purpose port in Sri Lanka, is strategically located just ten nautical miles from a key East-West trade route, positioning it as one of the major transshipment hubs in the South Asian region. With a deep draft of 17 meters, HIP is capable of accommodating a wide variety of shipping needs. Managed by Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG), a public-private partnership (PPP) between the Government of Sri Lanka and China Merchants Port Holdings (CMPort), a Hong Kong-based listed company, HIP benefits from the expertise of CMPort, a subsidiary of China Merchants Group and one of the largest public port developers and operators globally. HIP serves as a versatile hub offering a comprehensive range of services, including container handling, Ro-Ro (roll-on/roll-off), dry bulk, break bulk, project cargo, marine services, cruise operations, and oil and gas services. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure, HIP is designed to support both regional and global trade, providing efficient, reliable and comprehensive services that meet international standards. HIPG has developed its strategic plans to boost HIP under the Port-Park-City model, which combines normal port operations with an industrial park inside the port and an artificial island to be developed for recreational activities. The industrial park serves investors from around the world who establish plants for export operations, logistics facilities and value addition. The port aims to maintain high standards of quality and consistency while ensuring that all operations are conducted with integrity and responsibility. By harnessing the resources of both the Sri Lankan government and CMPort's extensive expertise, Hambantota International Port is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing Sri Lanka's position as a regional maritime hub.
