Jebsens was founded by Kristian Jebsen as Kristian Jebsens Rederi AS (KJR) in Bergen in 1929, starting operations with its first two 2,500 dwt newbuildings, one of them MV Vigsnes. The company grew steadily through the 1930s and emerged from the Second World War as a small shipping company with majority interests in small bulk carriers and medium-sized tankers. In the 1950s KJR expanded its fleet with 15,000 to 22,000 tonners, the handy-size bulk carriers of that time. When Atle Jebsen became President in 1967, KJR sold its tankers and focused on operating bulk carriers under long-lasting contracts with commercial partners. In the past two decades its niche market has been served by specialised self-discharging vessels known as the Beltships, with proven efficiency in short sea trading. Jebsens is a shipping industry pioneer in developing joint ventures with customers, other shipping companies and developing markets, a philosophy initiated by its founder. The Group became a major player in Norwegian and international shipping with a strong focus on the Far East, including a long strategic joint venture, the AboJeb Group in the Philippines (formerly the Aboitiz Jebsen Group), a major technical and crew management service provider in the region. With Bjørn Jebsen as Chairman from 2009, the Group has over 220 onshore personnel and over 8,000 seafarers in its pool, with offices and representatives in 7 countries and an integrated transport service portfolio ranging from ship owning, shipping, technical management, crewing and training to storage and distribution. Our vision is "Total Transport Solution Services": we aim to be a best-in-class global integrated supply chain service provider, through total transport solutions and services, competent staff, world-class processes, a global network, control of strategic assets and a fleet of specialised cargo vessels.
